The year 2002 marks the 100th anniversary of the extraordinary synagogue
in Subotica, Yugoslavia.
With its striking domes, sinuous lines and opulent ornamentation,
the synagogue is one of the jewels of art nouveau architecture in
Europe. But it has suffered more than half a century of damage and
neglect since the Holocaust. The World
Monuments Fund ranked it on its Watch List of the world's 100
most endangered monuments.
In the spirit of the new, democratic Yugoslavia, and with the support
of Subotica's Jewish community, the City
of Subotica has now embarked on an ambitious plan to restore the
synagogue to its original glory.
The synagogue will live again as a tribute to Subotica's Jewish history
and a monument to victims of the Shoah. It will also be an important
symbol of local rebirth following the traumas of the past decade.
