Synagogue used for religious services
For the first time since 1947, the Subotica synagogue is once
again being used for Jewish religious services.
The Jewish community gathered there in May 2002, to celebrate
the holiday of Shavuot, and since then has celebrated occasional
Sabbath and other holiday services.
Services are conducted by Stevan Lanyi (Ezra ben Jitzhok), a local
Jewish community member who is currently studying at the
Rabbinical Seminary of the Jewish University in Budapest.
At Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, in September, about
250 people attended the service -- and celebrated the Bat Mitzvah
of three local girls.
